Executive Function
Higher-order cognition is state-dependent.
The prefrontal cortex supports working memory, planning, decision-making, attention, and cognitive control. It is also particularly sensitive to stress-related changes in neurochemistry. Under significant stress, prefrontal network function can deteriorate, reducing access to the cognitive functions required for complex, flexible work.
This does not mean every stress response shuts down cognition. It means that physiological state affects which forms of cognition are most readily available.
Investment implication: cognitive capacity is not simply a fixed resource that can be extracted through more effort. The conditions under which that capacity is available matter.

Autonomic Regulation
Physiological regulation and cognitive performance are connected.
Research associates autonomic measures such as HRV with executive function, attention, and memory. HRV is not a direct measurement of cognitive capacity, but it provides one window into autonomic regulation and its relationship with cognitive functioning.
Investment implication: physiological regulation is part of the conditions under which cognitive capital can be deployed.
